Understanding Your Organisation: Nursing Homes

Medicaid — a jointly-funded state and federal health insurance program — is the single largest payer for long-term care in Wyoming, according to the health department. Because of that, declines in Medicaid cost coverage can hit providers pretty significantly. It’s especially a concern with increases in Wyoming’s aging population. ODH publishes various documents relating to the operation of nursing homes in Ohio, including guidance, rule interpretations, reports and a listing of resident right’s advocates. You must be medically eligible for Medicaid-covered long term care services.

MARSHALL — A new website is giving Minnesotans the ability to look up safety information on nursing homes and assisted living facilities. This month, a Minnesota-based nonprofit launched Elder Care IQ, a site that lets users search for elder care facilities and see state inspection reports from the Minnesota Department of Health. The Bureau of Regulatory Operations enforces state licensing laws and rules and federal certification requirements for participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Each nursing home/facility in Ohio receives at least one unannounced inspection/survey during a 9 to 15 month inspection/survey cycle.

However, a January survey by MDH found the facility in compliance with federal requirements. A search of the Elder Care IQ website showed information on a total of nine assisted living and nursing home sites in Marshall. Some of the sites had substantiated complaints, according to the Elder Care IQ website and reports on the OHFC website. State of Georgia government websites and email systems use “georgia.gov” or “ga.gov” at the end of the address. Before sharing sensitive or personal information, make sure you’re on an official state website.

The head of the nursing home's organizational structure is the individual owner. Below the owner are the nursing home administrators, including the director of nursing and director of rehabilitative services. Prairie View Senior Living in Tracy was listed on the Elder Care IQ website as having one substantiated investigation and three unsubstantiated investigations. The OHFC website listed reports of substantiated complaints at Prairie View in 2021 and 2022, involving altercations between a resident and other residents.

Assisted living facilities range in size from as few as 25 residents to 120 or more. Typically, a few "levels of care" are offered, with residents paying more for higher levels of care. The extra funding, Johansson continued, would help cover that gap, increasing Medicaid reimbursement rates in nursing homes to as close to 100% as possible. Elder Care IQ was created with the support of Elder Voice Advocates, a nonprofit working to stop abuse and neglect in long-term care facilities. Elder Care IQ is meant to be a screening tool to help Minnesotans choose care providers, Elder Voice Advocates said on the website. Although these are all separate fields with varied job descriptions, many nurses within these departments tend to work together quite closely.

Nursing homes, also called skilled nursing facilities, provide a wide range of health and personal care services. Their services focus on medical care more than most assisted living facilities. These services typically include nursing care, 24-hour supervision, three meals a day, and assistance with everyday activities. Rehabilitation services, such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy, are also available. Nursing homes are licensed and certified by state and federal government agencies to provide levels of care that range from custodial care to skilled nursing care that can only be delivered by trained professionals.
